What Happened on November 5, 2024
Every four years, the United States has presidential elections. In these elections, all Americans have a chance to vote for who they want to be their president the next four years. The details are pretty complicated, but basically, whoever gets the most votes will be the next president.
On November 5, Donald Trump won the election, so he will be the president for the next four years. He will start on January 20, 2025, about 10 weeks after the election.
What Has Trump Promised
Donald Trump has been campaigning to get elected for years now, and he has promised a lot of things. Not everything he has said will actually happen, but especially his statements about immigrants have been repeated over and over again. The following are some of those often repeated statements.
- Illegal immigrants are criminals who take our jobs. Although this is nonsense, a lot of people have heard this over and over again, and are believing this. This has created the basis for taking harsh actions against immigrants (after all, since they are criminals anyway, they don’t need protection).
- Deport everyone who is not here legally. He has vowed to round up and deport people who are not here legally, using the army to do that if necessary. And start giving the orders for this right after taking office.
- Close the border to stop people coming in. Anyone who wants to come to the United States must do so legally. Especially, if you want to apply for asylum, you have to wait in Mexico to get permission.
- End protected statuses. This is aimed at ending Temporary Protected Status (TSP) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), but can easily flow over in other, less well-known, protection statuses.
